'Minecraft' Mod Fosters an International Collaboration Effort to Combat Climate Change

A Minecraft modder has added some new gameplay issues for players to address in the form of climate change. Nick Porillo's GlobalWarming mod alters the climate by adjusting certain actions, like smelting ore. Temperatures will rise as carbon emissions increase and can cause intense storms, forest fires and an increase in snowfall as climate change takes hold.

You can fight the changes in the atmosphere by planting trees to absorb carbon dioxide. You can also purchase carbon offsets to combat the issue on a larger scale. This will give other players a reward for planting trees , which is in line with the mod's idea of working together to combat climate change.

"If the majority of players don't agree to play near-carbon-neutrally in the way they play and play, then the carbon score will only increase in-game. When the damage has a negative impact on the players, they will begin paying back that 'debt that they incurred," Porillo told Motherboard. "The idea is that if players put a little bit more effort into their efforts from the beginning to avoid emitting a ton, then they can entirely stay clear of the cost to be paid later."

He plans to add additional features such as scorecards that allow you to determine who are the most carbon-neutral players. You can also find your carbon footprint and add methane as greenhouse gas. This mod is compatible with Minecraft Server Java Edition. It is available for download from GitHub.
